About Harper's

Harper's Nursery and Flower Shop, Inc. is a 3rd generation family-owned and operated Arizona company, and does almost every phase of horticulture. We grow most of our own plant material from bedding plants and vegetables up to specimen size trees, including poinsettias and geraniums. These plants are grown on our eight-acre "farm" located at our Mesa facility at 1830 E. McKellips Road.

Besides our Mesa location, you can also find us in Scottsdale at 2529 N. Hayden Road – where you can treat yourself to coffee and refreshments at Oscar's Coffee Bar while you're there. We also carry garden antiques and garden gifts at both locations.

We design and install landscapes of any size, shape and fancy! Our landscape designers can do a complete make-over of the smallest patio or design your landscape from the ground up including patios, walks, gazebos, firepits, etc.

If you are interested in locally grown and adapted plants from a locally owned and operated nursery, Harper's is the place! We've been serving the Valley of the Sun since 1945 with one mission in mind – to ensure that our customers receive the best service, the most accurate information, and highest quality plants, flowers and gifts available!

And we guarantee it! Harper's offers the only lifetime guarantee on plants in the state - and as far as we know, in the country! Jay, Jeff, and Jerry Harper (a.k.a. "The Harper Boys") would love to have you come in and visit either location and get to know our staff on a first-name basis. We think you'll see why, since 1945, Harper's has been known as the Valley's gardening authority!

Harper's History – In the business of growing plants for over 50 years!

In 1945 Mr. Harper, Sr. and his wife Alice formally opened their first Nursery at 1701 E. Thomas Road on one acre of land that had been purchased from Mr. Harper's brother. Thomas Road was known at this time as 'Break Axle Road', as it was a dirt road located outside the city limits of Phoenix.

While working for the Phoenix Fire Department, Mr. Harper, Sr. started growing garden products as a hobby. He had always been interested in gardening, and during his off time, pursued this interest on the one acre of land, which later grew into one of the Valley's largest and most respected nursery operations.

During World War II, the government asked citizens to grow 'Victory Gardens' in order to produce much needed fruits and vegetables. The Harpers used the one acre for such an endeavor and gave away to friends and family the product from this effort. By 1945 people were stopping and buying Nursery products and, thus, started the Harpers into the retail nursery business. In 1950, Mrs. Harper organized and opened a flower shop in the nursery.

A main principle of business for the Harper's in these early years was to 'get what the people were looking for, even if it isn't in stock...find the product and provide the customer with delivery and full service.' This is still an objective of Harper's when serving the customer today.

The Harpers' family business has continued to grow and thrive with children and grandchildren stepping in to fill their grandfather's shoes. The current generation of Harpers running the nurseries is John Jay, Jeff and Jerry.

Community Involvement

The Harper family has been committed to "giving back" to our community for three generations. John H. Harper and Alice Harper were deeply involved in Rotary 100 in Phoenix. John and Adele Harper helped start La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church, were active in planning and zoning in the early stages of Scottsdale's growth and the Scottsdale Boys and Girls Clubs. The "Harper Boys" are active in their local churches, Young Life, Mesa HoHoKans, and Scottsdale Charros among other volunteer activities. We're glad we can give back to those who have given us so much!
